A journal describing in detail a trip beginning in Trazegnies (Belgium) and proceeding through Liessies (France) and other areas of Alsace to Switzerland and on to Rome, places visited on the way including Turin, Milan, Bergamo, Brescia, Verona, Vicenza, Padua, Venice, Ferrara, Bologne, Loreto on the Adriatic; the manuscript ends in Rome, to which a large section is devoted. The writer describes the countryside, the conditions of the roads (sometimes "detestables"), the attractions and conditions in places visited, including descriptions of art, palaces, libraries, churches and cathedrals, the state of commerce; instances of special reference are to the writer's presentation to the King and royal family in Turin, to the buildings of Palladio in Vicenza, the outstanding botanical gardens in Padua, the complex structure of the government of Bologna as part of the papal states
